I only recently heard about this beautifully simple idea. The EnviroMission company will soon begin construction of a giant 1km concrete tower surrounded by a huge greenhouse "collector zone". Air under the collector zone is heated by the sun to 35°C above the ambient, and rises up through the tower at 15 metres per second. Turbine generators at the base of the tower will generate 200 MW of clean, emission free renewable energy, enough to power 200,000 Australian homes.
The tower will be built in south-west New South Wales. Construction is planned to be completed by 2008.
