Urban sprawl is the term used to describe a metropolitan area that has grown to a very large size, in terms of population and land area. Urban sprawls are typically suburbian, resulting in low population density. This in turn can result in problems such as inefficient land use, endemic car usage and the homogenisation of society and culture.
Arcology is the combination of architecture and ecology, resulting in a human habitat that alleviates some of the problems associated with urban sprawl. It is a natural progression from multi-storey buildings such as office towers and blocks of apartments, making the best use of space in all three dimensions. An arcology could use about 2% as much land as a typical city of similar population, eliminating unnecessary car usage and hence drastically reducing transport infrastructure and land use. It is an environmentally aware and energy efficient solution, in terms of Arcosanti: Arcology Theory
